Los Angeles-based couture designer Sue Wong definitely knows how to throw a bash… in grand “Gatsby” style! Often described as the high priestess of Hollywood fashion, Wong recently opened up the doors to her spectacular Los Feliz villa for the unveiling of her “Great Gatsby Fall 2013 Collection,” inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel. The star-studded soirée that paid homage to the Roaring Twenties was truly an affair to remember, as we all anticipate the May 10th theatrical release of Baz Lurhmann’s remake, starring Leonardo Dicaprio and Carey Mulligan.

The bubbly flowed freely, while guests enjoyed informal modeling of stunningly opulent cocktail dresses and exquisite evening gowns, reminiscent of the Flapper era, but with a modern day appeal. With glittering fringed skirts, art deco motifs, gemstone hues of sapphire, jade, citrine and carnelian, Wong’s Great Gatsby Collection evokes the images and excitement surrounding the Jazz Age.
The designer describes the new collection, “My new designs bring to life the spirit of an era that Fitzgerald flawlessly depicted in his novel. Several passages in the book inspired me to translate a generation’s jubilation into wearable pieces for today’s modern women. The book remains a classic because we can all still relate to many of its themes. What I offer is not an escape but a way of bringing into a woman’s everyday life a jolt of glamour and romance.”

She adds, “What I offer is not an escape but a way of bringing into a woman’s everyday life a jolt of glamour and romance. Consider the passage before the narrator Nick Carraway meets the mysterious Jay Gatsby – ‘There was music from my neighbor’s house…in his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings of the champagne and the stars’.”
This latest collection seems tailor-made for Wong, whose home ‘The Cedars’ provided the luxurious setting for the evening, taking guests back to the Golden Age of Tinseltown. The designer has restored the legendary home to its original grandeur, since purchasing it in 2004.
Taking part in the evening’s events and dressed for the occasion were Kelsey Grammer and wife Katye Walsh, Bai Ling, Erin Cahill, Hana Mae Lee, James Keach, Thomas Jane, plus many others.
